CMM Metrology Technician

Location: Riverside, CA

Reports to: Quality Engineering Manager

SUMMARY OF ROLE

The Metrologist is responsible for performing dimensional and functional inspections in accordance with part drawings, customer requirements, and applicable standards (e.g., ASME Y14.5). This role supports quality, manufacturing, and validation activities by ensuring accurate measurement methods, reliable data, and proper maintenance of metrology equipment. The position requires close collaboration with Quality Engineering, Quality Control, and Process Engineering teams, as well as interaction with external calibration vendors and suppliers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Metrology & Inspection:
    • Program and operate tactile CMMs and optical systems (OGP/SmartScope Flash 500)
    • Good knowledge in programming in Zone 3, Measure X, Measuremind 3D, MCOSMOS
    • Use of a variety of measuring tools, (micrometers, calipers, no/no-go gages, bore gages, height stands, etc.)
    • Perform dimensional inspections including First Article Inspection (FAI) and layout inspections
    • Develop and optimize measurement methodologies and inspection strategies
    • Interpret engineering drawings and apply GD&T per ASME Y14.5
  • Equipment & Calibration:
    • Maintain and monitor calibration status of all inspection equipment
    • Perform/coordinate calibration and preventive maintenance activities
    • Troubleshoot and support debugging of metrology equipment
    • Interface with external calibration vendors as required
    • Maintain calibration and preventive maintenance schedules
  • Data Analysis & Validation Support
    • Perform Gage R&R and process capability studies (Cp, Cpk, Ppk)
    • Analyze measurement data to identify out-of-spec conditions and trends
    • Support process validations (IQ/OQ/PQ) and engineering studies
    • Ensure data integrity, traceability, and proper documentation
  • Process Improvement & Support:
    • Designing of fixtures, jigs, and other holding items for part inspection Develop inspection standards, forms, and work instructions
    • Train Quality Control personnel on measurement techniques and GD&T
    • Support customer and internal audits as needed
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams on quality issues and root cause investigations
  • Compliance & Documentation:
    • Ensure compliance with applicable SOPs, cGMP, and quality standards
    • Document and report deviations, OOS conditions, and anomalies
    • Maintain organized records for inspection data and first article samples

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate degree or equivalent/training preferred.
  • 5 years’ experience as a Metrology inspector with increasing levels of responsibility
  • 3-5 years’ experience in plastic injection molding
  • Experience with CMM’s and Optical OGP Smart scope’s and all hand held metrology tools such as micrometers, calipers, no/no-go gages, bore gages, height stands, etc.
  • Working knowledge of PCDMIS, Measure Mind 3D and MCOSMOS
  • Blueprint reading, including knowledge in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and ANSI Y14.5.
  • Good understanding of Cosmetic defects in plastics and Visual inspections.
  • Understands theory and uses of SPC, SQC and process capability studies.
  • Experience in the IQ, OQ, PQ Validation process
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Computer literate (Microsoft Excel, Word, SPC program, etc.). Minitab experience is a plus
