JOB DESCRIPTION

Title:? Turning Operator

Position: Non-exempt

Location:? Wakefield, MI

Manager: No

Reports to: CNC Production Manager

SUMMARY OF ROLE

The focus of the Turning Operator will be to operate the turning center for Pre and Post Heat Treat Steel machining activities in the turning department. Position is responsible for day-to-day productivity under the Department Lead. ?

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Administer and meet scheduled hours and dates of all tasks, with the goal of completing tasks ahead of schedule

  • Utilize machinery & prioritize equipment usage to obtain the quickest lead times

  • Maximize efficiency by working to minimize setup and run times in all machines

  • Maintain an attitude of Continuous Improvement. Make suggestions for improvements

  • Maintain a department that is neat, organized, and clean at all times

  • Goal is a self-sustaining department to meet all requirements of internal customers

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Problem solving for all turning related problems as needed

  • All turning paperwork cleanout and organization at program completion

  • Maintain and advise lead of all needed repairs on the machinery?

  • Ensure all scheduled operations/tasks are complete

  • Coordinate/review all inspection of finished blocks internally (In-Machine) and with quality department as needed

  • Assure that the quality of work is to the satisfaction of the internal customer (Tool makers) & Westfall Engineering guidelines

  • Run/Operate all machines in department

  • Adjust schedule as needed within the department to maximize output and reduce lead times. Coordinate with the scheduling department?

  • Update the schedule as tasks are completed or their status changed

  • Mark as complete on department schedule

  • Mark as ready for the next operation in the next department if applicable?

  • Make suggestions for equipment, software, training, and resources that would make the department more efficient

  • Responsible for Department Housekeeping, Cleanliness, and Organization as required

  • Train and coach Entry Level employees as required

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or equivalency required

  • Technical degree preferred

  • 5+ years general machining experience

  • Strong mechanical aptitude required

  • Organizational abilities for work, self, and department

  • Proven ability to work in a team environment

  • Effective communication skills both written and verbal

  • Ability to operate all equipment in the department.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment is usually in an indoor concrete floored precision machining shop. General noise level can fluctuate from medium to high on a constant basis.
