Tooling Technician

Location: Asheboro, NC

The Tooling Technician is responsible for the setup, maintenance, repair, and modification of tools, dies, molds, and fixtures used in the manufacturing process. This role ensures tooling is in optimal condition to support production efficiency, part quality, and equipment safety. The technician works closely with engineering, production, and maintenance teams to troubleshoot tooling issues, perform preventative maintenance, and support new tooling implementation. Precision, attention to detail, and knowledge of machining processes are critical to success in this role.

Reports to: Tooling Supervisor Manager

SUMMARY OF ROLE

Tooling Maintenance & Repair:

  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance on injection molds and tooling to ensure they are in optimal working condition.
  • Inspect molds for signs of wear and damage, addressing issues such as cracks, misalignments, or worn-out components.
  • Repair molds and tooling by replacing damaged or worn parts, ensuring proper functioning for the molding process.
  • Perform tool modifications as required for new product introductions or process improvements.

Mold Set-Up & Changeover:

  • Assist with the mold set-up on molding machines, ensuring proper alignment, calibration, and installation of tools.
  • Adjust molds to ensure they meet production specifications and requirements.
  • Coordinate mold changes between production runs to minimize downtime and ensure seamless transitions between different products or materials.

Tooling Troubleshooting:

  • Troubleshoot and diagnose issues related to molds, tooling, and related equipment.
  • Identify root causes of molding defects, such as flash, short shots, or part distortion, and adjust tooling or molding parameters to resolve the issue.
  • Collaborate with production operators and quality control teams to quickly address any tool-related challenges that may affect product quality.

Tooling Optimization:

  • Monitor mold performance and recommend or implement process improvements to reduce cycle times, enhance mold life, and minimize downtime.
  • Document tooling adjustments and improvements to ensure consistency in production and support future maintenance activities.

Documentation & Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate records of mold maintenance, repairs, adjustments, and modification.
  • Prepare detailed reports on tooling performance and issues, providing insights into mold conditions and any necessary improvements.
  • Ensure that all tooling documentation, including maintenance logs and tooling specifications, is kept up to date.

Collaboration:

  • Work closely with production supervisors and operators to ensure that tooling is properly maintained, set up, and used according to production requirements.
  • Collaborate with the engineering team to identify opportunities for tooling improvements or new tooling designs for enhanced production efficiency.
  • Assist with training production staff on tooling maintenance procedures and best practices.

Safety & Compliance:

  • Ensure all tooling work is performed in compliance with company safety standards and relevant health and safety regulations.
  • Promote safe working practices by ensuring that all tooling equipment is in safe operating condition and that workers are trained in safe handling and use.
  • Participate in tooling-related safety audits and contribute to continuous improvement in safety protocols.

Tooling Inventory & Ordering:

  • Track the condition and availability of tooling and equipment, ensuring that critical tools are properly stored and maintained.
  • Work with the purchasing department to order replacement parts, materials, and supplies as necessary for tooling maintenance.

Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Technical degree or certification in Tooling, Machining, Manufacturing Technology, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a Tooling Technician, Mold Technician, or similar role in a manufacturing environment.
  • Hands-on experience in injection molding or related processes and tooling systems.
  • Experience with mold repair, preventive maintenance, and tooling setup is essential.
  • Strong mechanical and technical aptitude with a deep understanding of tooling, molds, and machining techniques.
  • Proficient in using precision measurement tools (e.g., micrometers, calipers, CMMs) to check tooling accuracy.
  • Familiarity with CAD and CAM software to interpret tooling designs and assist with modifications.
  • Troubleshooting skills for diagnosing tooling or mold-related problems and determining solutions quickly.
